Emotional Detachment: How to Purposefully Do It and Maximize It

Emotional Detachment | yoloabundance.com

When people talk about emotional detachment it’s always easy to focus on the aspect of it being the inability to connect emotionally or the loss of feeling towards a person or situation.

However emotional detachment can also be a powerful approach to personal growth if purposely done.

Of course, there will be experiences that will naturally and unwillingly result in emotional detachment, but what we want to highlight here is the fact that emotional detachment can also be a result of a personal decision, leading to a positive result.

Understanding Emotional Detachment

Emotional detachment in most cases refers to the state of being emotionally disconnected whether due to natural occurrences or life-changing decisions. Voluntarily detaching yourself means setting boundaries with certain activities, groups, or people that cause emotional distress or overwhelming emotional demand.

What detachment does is it limits the amount of emotion you are investing by controlling it. This is the ability to decide when to engage and when to hold back a little bit and give yourself some distance. This does not mean blocking off feelings or people but choosing the correct set of emotions.

To help evaluate the need to emotionally detach, these following questions will be helpful according to Remez Sasson from Success Consciousness:

  1. Do you allow other people’s moods to affect your state of mind?

  2. Do you allow other people’s frustration, anger, or emotions to affect you?

  3. How many times have you got emotionally involved with something against your will and better judgment?

  4. Do you get angry, frustrated, or disappointed by trivial matters?

  5. Do you allow external matters to affect your state of mind and your feelings?

If your answer is Yes in any of the questions, then emotional detachment will help you control your emotional reaction to these scenarios. To a certain degree, trying to achieve detachment will be difficult but the effort to start doing it is all that matters.

Detach with Love

Love has always been the easiest answer to a lot of emotional distress, and that’s not just because it is easy to point love as a solution, but because love is really effective! Even when you are at a point that you decided that you want emotional freedom, it is best to detach with love and not with a heavy heart. When emotionally detaching yourself, the constant reminder to love yourself and put yourself first really boosts your eagerness to move on and finally let yourself go. After all, emotional detachment is for your own benefit.

Loving yourself results to eventually loving people around you. Emotional detachment is just the first step to keep your emotions in check so you can choose your responses more, connect and engage in a more effective way, and most importantly, emotionally attach too much more deserving connections.
